Area Newspapers
The following newspapers have been published at various times during the county's history. They are listed by county, town and then by date of publication. Most are on microfilm. If a date is listed under SCHS, that newspaper is available at the Stevens County Historical Society in Colville. KFPL means that the Kettle Falls Public Library has that newspaper. The (*) indicates these are original newspapers (not microfilm). "Inc" indicates incomplete coverage. Other repositories for these newspapers include Eastern Washington University at Cheney, Washington State University at Pullman, University of Washington at Seattle, the Washington State Library in Olympia and the Washington State Archives in Olympia.
Update to this list....the Colville Public Library now has the Colville Examiner 1907 - 1910 on CD and March 21, 1908 - April 30, 1948 on microfilm. NeWGS just recently added microfilm of several previously undiscovered newspapers from the 1890s. These include the Colville Republican, the Stevens County Standard, the Colville Index, the Statesman Index and the Stevens County Statesman Index. They have now been digitized and are availalbe on the Crossroads of the Columbia website.
The Northeast Washington Genealogical Society has the Stevens County Miner on microfilm. It is by no means a complete collection of that newspaper, but what issues there are cover the years 1888 and 1889 and to be researched must be requested from NeWGS. We have also acquired a large collection of actual newspapers. These items are in our private collection (not at the library). See the list below.
NeWGS has indexed many of these newspapers and look-ups can be requested by contacting the research team. Also the Colville Examiner from 1907-1922 can be searched online at the Library of Congress. The Washington State Library also has a large collection of local newspapers, a list of which you can search at their website.
