Welcome to Stevens County

NeWGS is based in Colville, WA, which is located in Stevens County.  At one time Stevens County covered most of the northeast part of our state, including what is now Ferry and Pend Oreille counties.  It was formed in 1863 from Walla Walla County, with Ferry County breaking away in 1899 and Pend Oreille in 1911.  Some early records for those counties are to be found in Stevens county materials, some of which date back to 1861.  If you have ancestors or family in the area, please explore our site.

Next meeting

March 14, 2012   The Computer Interest Group will meet in the basement of the Colville Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Grady Knight the owner of G2 Web Design will demonstrate the How-To's and What-For's of MetaData entry
What is metadata? Metadata means data about data. Although the definition sounds simple, metadata is anything but. Metadata is used to describe the context, content and structure of materials. Those materials might be books, photographs, archival records, audiotapes, video, etc. Often it is the metadata that is searched thus leading you to the item that you desire. Come learn from Grady just why Metadata is important in the world of genealogy archiving.

The afternoon meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Family History Center located in the LDS Church at 260 E. Juniper in Colville.  Our guest speaker will be Paula Davis from the Heritage Funeral Home in Spokane. she will share some ideas on How to Write Your Life's Story/Obituary. Paula was quoted in the Spokesman Review, August 7, 2011 edition as follows: "The best time to write your own obituary is when you are not only alive but healthy, she said. You can have the last word." There will be hand-outs available for attendees.

Both meetings are free and anyone with an interest in tracing their family history is welcome.
